05/07/13Be a Big Brother or Big Sister! For kids and teenagers, especially those in disadvantaged environments, the company and support of a caring adult mentor can be an invaluable resource and inspiration; in turn, the experience of being a mentor to a young person is often incredibly rewarding for the mentor. Interested in giving it a try? Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County is having a mixer next Tuesday, May 14, at Coco, for individuals learning about volunteering as Big Brothers or Big Sisters. "Bigs" will be in attendance to answer questions and explain what this unique program is all about; the organization matches at-risk children with caring mentors, who provide them with support, advice, and friendship to help them reach their potential––ultimately building better communities for... |

05/03/13Hamburg Music Festival 2013: for "real and actionable good"It's shaping up to be a great summer for music, and the 2013 Hamburg Music Festival is an early highlight worth mentioning. Beer geeks love the funky, earthy notes that wild and sour yeast strains offer; better yet, and somewhat surprisingly, sours are a fantastic "gateway beer" for wine drinkers who claim to hate the taste of beer. If you love riesling, sauvignon blanc, and other snappy grapes, sour beer has your name written all over it. Pizza Plant on Transit Road is already the place to be on Sundays if you're a beer lover. This weekend that's truer than ever, as the Plant is hosting Sour Power: Beers That Make You Pucker. The lineup is absolutely killer: famed legends like... |

04/30/13Australian singer/songwriter Shelley Segal comes to BuffaloShelley Segal is living proof that you don’t have to be religious to bring down the house with a voice full of soul. The Australian singer-songwriter’s powerful pipes and jazz/funk/reggae/blues guitar chops complement thoughtful lyrics celebrating life, love, and reason––her song “Saved,” which derides the “dooms-daying” bombarding our world from the religious Right, has become an anthem of the secular movement after she performed at last year’s Reason Rally to a crowd of 25,000 in Washington, D.C. Her impressive list of upcoming projects includes a jazz album with guitarist singer-song writer Adam Levy, a folk-pop album of love songs, and an upbeat indie-folk EP collaboration with her partner, titled Snow Pear. ... |
