A Civil War Memorial Day tribute at Forest Lawn

A Civil War Memorial Day tribute at Forest Lawn

The guns of the Civil War have remained silent for 145 years, but its tales of heroism, bloodshed, and heartache still grip our hearts and minds. Memorial Day is an especially apt time to remember these, and on Sunday, May 30, Forest Lawn Cemetery will host Muster in the Meadows, a day-long commemoration of the Civil War and a tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The festivities kick off at noon with an opening ceremony followed with proclamations by Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, New York State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt, and New York State Senator Antoine Thompson. In keeping with the military theme of the day, U.S. Army Brigadier General Jeffrey W. Foley will also speak.

This family friendly event will have authentic Union and Confederate encampments, reenactments, and tributes to fallen soldiers, including a tribute to Brigadier General Albert James Myer, the first commander of the Army Signal Corps and co-founder of World Meteorological Organization, who is buried in Forest Lawn. (2010 also marks the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Signal Corps.)

Free to the public, Muster in the Meadow will also include a parade, historic exhibits, and plenty of food.

Free parking and a free shuttle to the cemetery will be available at Canisus College's Science Hall parking ramp. Muster in the Meadow runs from noon to 6 p.m. at Forest Lawn, located at 1411 Delaware Avenue.
