Those creative, pushing-you-to-the-edge folks at Torn Space Theater will host their first annual fundraiser on Saturday, October 23, 2010.

“Prom of the Dead” is being held at the Dnipro Ukrainian Cultural Center, an appropriate venue for this performance group, which frequently stages site-specific happenings in underappreciated cultural landmarks.

The concept for the event fuses Halloween eeriness with prom-time tradition. According to founder Dan Shanahan, “Nostalgia—or how people relate to nostalgia—is a theme often addressed in our work. Dnipro—built in 1914—has a beautiful grand ballroom. The atmosphere of the space works towards a time reminiscent of a real time that you once dreamed of. We also wanted to throw a party in a ballroom with dancing—one that steers away from Victorian Debutante Balls and moves into teen horror films. It is also one of the few places to offer fine Ukrainian beers by Obolon.”

James Wild and Ron Ehmke of Real Dream Cabaret will emcee, guiding guests through an experience both wildly entertaining and a bit unexpected. Prom of the Dead also features a special mini-production created by the Real Dream Cabaret, members of Irving Klaws (along with Vic Lazar), performing music by The Pixies, blues legend Dan Harper, and local DJs spinning everything left-of-the-dial, including dance hall, rock and soul.

As far as décor, “expect old-school prom terrorized by projections of B-side slasher flicks”—these created by Reactionary Ensemble.

Everyone is invited to dress in their most frightening, offbeat, hilarious, or ingenious ballroom attire in order to compete for a prize and the coveted titles of Prom of the Dead King and Queen. When asked what he will be wearing, Shanhan replied: “A black velvet coat, black pants with white stripes, a tie that shines, and a tilted hat.”

All proceeds from the evening will provide operational and programmatic support for Torn Space Theater. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Arrive promptly for free drinks from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be a cash bar after 10 p.m.
