Music for Tunes4food on March 19
Whoever said punk is dead has obviously never been to Buffalo.
Evidence? Tunes4food will be hosting its third concert benefiting Sophie’s Club and the Food Bank of Western New York at Mohawk Place on March 19, and the revival concert will feature bands from the 1970s and 1980s Buffalo punk scene, including the reunion of the iconic Pauline & the Perils. Local legends Terry Sullivan, the Vores, the Rain, the Promise, Sons of Chuck Berry, Free Henry!, Grace Stumberg and Mike Vargovich will also perform.
A compilation CD titled This Is It Vol. 4, featuring artists from the 1977–89 Buffalo punk scene, will be released and sold at the concert. The new album also includes re-mastered songs from previous This Is It volumes. Elmer Ploetz’s BFLO PNK 1.0, a documentary chronicling the history of the Buffalo punk movement, will premiere at the venue as well.
“Music can change the world. It can have a social impact,” says concert organizer Bob James. A local music producer and educator, James has spearheaded other benefit concerts at the Walden Galleria Mall, as well as the twenty-five-hour Food Bank benefit concert held last summer. James also heads up the Music in Action program with Goo Goo Dolls member Robby Takac, which aims to provide high school students with the necessary skills to succeed in the music business. (Buffalo native and graduate of the Music in Action program Grace Stumberg will be covering a song off This Is It Vol. 4 at the concert.)
Tunes4food hopes to raise 100,000 pounds of food from its four scheduled events this year. All profits from the digital downloads of the album will go straight to charity. The show starts at 8 p.m., and admission is $10.
