11/16/11UBCFA "Goes" with David Shire
From Harold Arlen to Michael Bennett to Tom Fontana, Western New York has always been the launch pad for fine entertainers. One of the most lauded luminaries is David Shire, an Academy Award and two-time Grammy winner and multiple Tony and Emmy nominee, who has composed music for the theater (Baby, Big), movies, television (Shining Time Station), and beyond. He composed original music for Saturday Night Fever, All the President's Men, and Norma Rae (which included the Oscar winning song “It Goes Like It Goes”). Mr. Shire’s career is being celebrated in a new musical compilation called It Goes Like It Goes which opens on Wednesday, November 16. Conceived by Nathan R.... 10/21/11District of the Dead
Are you ready to let out a terror-induced ear-splitting shrill? Are you ready to be scared half to death in order to gain a new appreciation for life? Ready for that heart pounding, adrenaline-pumping thrill that you only get this time of year? Well you’re just in luck. Buffalo’s first professional haunted house is opening its doors this year. For the past seven years the folks behind District of the Dead have ben staging succesful home hauntings, but this year they are going pro with their introduction of District of the Dead. While it may not be the largest haunted house experience available in WNY, it is entirely homegrown and is certainly the most creative. Making good use of the old Don Pablo’s building at 1951 Elmwood... Posted at 08:00 AM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

09/21/11Earth's Daughters pack October with literary events
Call October literary rush month. The first few weeks feature two great literary experiences that no bookworm should miss. On October 1st is BIG NIGHT, presented by Just Buffalo. It celebrates Earth’s Daughters 40th year of publication. Earth’s Daughters is Buffalo’s only feminist literary journal. Published twice a year, the journal features mostly poetry and focuses on women, although they accept submissions from men as well. Held at WNY’s Book Arts Center at 8pm, the night will include live music by La Marimba, food by Geoffery Gatza, and readings by Earth’s Daughters founder, Judith Kerman, as well as six co-editors—Ansie Baird, Kastle Brill, Jennifer Campbell,... 07/08/11This weekend's garden walks
Buffalonians know to make the best of the summer—it’s something you learn when your city gets national-punchline levels of snow for half the year. One of the best examples of Buffalo’s celebratory summertime is our local garden walks. In fact, garden walks have become something of a seasonal phenomenon around these parts: Garden Walk Buffalo is the largest garden tour in America, drawing approximately 55,000 visitors per year, and other regional garden tours have become increasingly popular, each year attracting larger crowds and new gardeners. “The avid, engaged, and civic-minded urban gardeners of Buffalo are the reasons for (this) success,” says Jim Charlier (pictured above), president of Garden Walk Buffalo and... 05/27/11Joplin relief efforts need our support
As many of us know, recent violent weather gave rise to tornadoes in America’s heartland. One vicious twister ripped through Joplin, Missouri killing at least 125 people and destroying more than a quarter of the city’s homes and businesses. Relief efforts have been swift and organizations have provided food, shelter, and reparations. But many of us still wonder how we can help. One such way is through donations to Convoy of Hope. 417 magazine, a fellow member of the City & Regional Magazine Association, is based in southwestern Missouri. It has asked its readers and friends to donate $10 to Convoy of Hope—which assists with disaster response and community outreach—in order to aid the recovery efforts underway in Joplin. As members of... Posted at 06:06 AM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

05/27/1121st Century Fund: Lets Talk!
Buffalo is known as the City of Good Neighbors, but for those of us interested in having a more significant impact, The Community Foundation’s 21st Century Fund has posted an open invitation to all members of the community, with hopes of increasing general awareness and familiarity with the Fund’s impact on Western New York. The event, to be held at the Buffalo Museum of Science on Tuesday, June 7th is rightfully named “Lets Talk”. Intended to bring both members and non-members together during a non-voting year, the Fund invites the community to view the last organization which won their grant—the Buffalo Museum of Science—and to spread word of the Fund to new people. Aside from learning about the 21st Century Fund, attendees will receive... Posted at 05:51 AM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |
