Artistic reflection on Veterans Day

Artistic reflection on Veterans Day

Veterans Day is tomorrow, Friday, November 11th, and it's an important day to reflect on the sacrifices America's soldiers make every day.

464 Gallery offers a very unique way to do so, as it hosts Sam Sacco’s inaugural fine art show, Fading Stars, Battered Stripes. Featuring new paintings inspired by his own military service in Afghanistan, the exhibition runs through November 16, and an opening reception will be held tomorrow from 6 to 10 p.m.

Serving in the Army National Guard for seven years, Sacco was deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 for one year. He uses the anguish felt by him and his fellow soldiers in his artwork and hopes that the exhibition can inspire and educate others about the travails of war. Using a mix of acrylic paint, charcoal, and digital photography, Sacco hopes to connect with the viewer as he shares his experiences, many of which were quite "surreal and graphic," as he puts it.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Sacco’s artwork will go toward the veterans group WNYHeroes. Free stree parking is available, and there will be complimentary food and drink.
