A house party with Carolyn Mark

A house party with Carolyn Mark

It’s been a little more than a year since Spree’s Ron Ehmke brought “Sounds & Echoes: A Musical Portrait of Buffalo, NY” to our attention and highlighted one portrait in particular, that of the husband and wife Susan Tanner and Marty Boratin. Stemming from a deep love of music, the couple has opened its home to numerous artists to spend the night as they pass through Buffalo. Their next guest/performer? Canadian singer-songwriter Carolyn Mark.

After getting her initial start in an elementary school production of Charlotte’s Web, Mark’s nearly twenty year career has taken her around the world, touring both as part of several bands and as a solo artist. Her longest run with a group was back in the nineties with an all-girl quartet from Victoria, BC, the Vinaigrettes. The group remained together for the better part of the decade and recorded six albums in that time.

Now primarily a solo artist, Mark is preparing to release her eighth full-length record with her longtime label, Mint Records, on September 18 entitled The Queen of Vancouver. Mark’s sound is comical at times, and has a very pleasant, rolling essence to it, which can be heard songs like "Done Something Wrong" and "Edmonton."

For those who can’t make it up to the house concert at Tanner and Boratin’s home, or if you just want to catch as much of Mark as possible while she’s in town, she will be performing at Abilene Bar and Lounge in Rochester tonight at 8:30 p.m.
