Spree Music with J. DiDomizio: Ben Folds Five
Just over one year ago, I chatted with Ben Folds, and we discussed a new Ben Folds Five album. On September 18th, that album “The Sound of the Life of the Mind” was released and gave a reunited Ben Folds Five (and Ben Folds) their highest Billboard charting at #10. Friday, the band comes to Kleinhans Music Hall in support of the record.
Playing their unmistakable mix of piano pop rock, Folds, drummer Darren Jessee, and bassist Robert Sledge still have the chops they left us with over a decade ago. The new album is filled with songs that sound like they have been transported form the 90’s, as well as a number of cuts that spotlight the growth they’ve achieved working with other collaborators.
“Do It Anyway” was chosen as the first single, which makes sense considering that it sounds like it could have been on a previous album. Check out their recently released video for the song featuring Rob Corddry and the Fraggles.
This won’t be Folds’ first stop in Buffalo, as his solo tours have brought him to the city and the region a number of times. Most memorably he performed a couple of outdoor shows, one for Thursday at the Square, and another in Niagara Square a few years later.
Ben Folds Five’s live shows have an unmistakable vitality that make them worth seeing over and over again. This past June, the band performed at the Mountain Jam Festival, in Hunter Mountain, NY. New fans should take a look at this video to see what they might be in for in Symphony Circle this Friday. Long-time fans should take a peek and see how the band hasn’t skipped a beat.
Tickets are available online or at the Kleinhans box office. Doors are at 7:00pm and opening for Ben Folds Five is Kate Miller-Heidke
