On View / Glick at Anna Kaplan Contemporary

Like many of us, painter Pam Glick is fascinated by Niagara Falls, and—like some of us—she’s able to channel that fascination through her art. Her paintings are not even close to literal depictions, but she does express the chaos and volatility of the turbulent waters. The paintings are structured, however, by visible grids that contain the seemingly random groups of brightly colored marks and shapes. Critics have remarked on Glick’s energetic and visceral mark-making, which often seems to form into a type of language. Glick’s work had made its mark in other ways; the artist has had solo shows at New York’s White Columns and Los Angeles’ Michael Kohn, among other distinguished venues. This is her second outing at Anna Kaplan (formerly BT&C Gallery).

 

Glick’s work is reminiscent of the neoexpressionist movement of the 1980s, but she’s invigorated those gestural strategies, employing fresh, elemental forms and radiant color.

 

The artist explains how she makes the connection with Niagara Falls as follows: “The geometry of its forty-five-degree angle and contrasting elements have endless possibilities for me, including ideas of stillness, motion, color, repetition, visual strata, material memory and mystery.” She’s named this series Slowly I Turn, referring to the classic comedic sketch performed by Abbott & Costello, the Three Stooges, and others.

 

Slowly I Turn opens Thursday, October 12, with a reception at 6 to 9 p.m., and runs through November 11. An artist talk takes place at the gallery on Thursday, November 9, 6 p.m.
