Concerts / Mar Salá

From Spain with amor

July 20

Born in Seville, Spain, and based in Brooklyn since the early 1990s, singer/songwriter/guitarist Marta Hernández—better known as Mar Salá—has a powerful presence both visually and musically, built on sharp contrasts and bold combinations. While she began her US career focusing on the folk-based flamenco of her native land, she soon began absorbing a far broader range of influences, giving each her own spin. Her three albums and her concerts these days evoke the time-honored rhythms of Brazil and the Caribbean as well as contemporary Spanish and Latin American pop, stateside jazz, and perhaps even a dash of hiphop syncopation. She includes Tropicalia superstars and veteran genre-crossers Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil as inspirations, and Gal Costa seems like another obvious forerunner. Salá dubs the resulting blend “SpaNYC” music, and it’s a perfect fit for PAUSA, Buffalo’s home base for inventive stylistic fusions from around the world. She’ll be joined onstage by guitarist Drew Azzinaro, percussionist Ethan Fox, and bass player Ben Levitt, primed for high-energy fun on a warm midsummer night. Their last appearance at the intimate venue sold out, so get there early.
