Squeaky Wheel puts the fun in Dysfunctional

Squeaky Wheel puts the fun in Dysfunctional

Okay, so as a Squeaky Wheel boardmember, I kind of have to rave about the annual Dysfunctional Holiday Party (scheduled for Friday, December 18). But in this case, it’s easy for me—it really is one of the holiday parties of the year.

Why is it so beloved? (And make no mistake, it is beloved.) Probably because it’s such a bewitching stew of merriment and art. There are pictures with Santa Claus and a special guest (my 2008 pic is still on the fridge), as well as food and bev.

There is a sizable gift auction with killer arts and culture items, including handmade jewelry from local vendors Lily Pickford and Dana Saylor Design, and Tamaran Designs knit and crochet wear.

But the real highlight is the art, i.e., films, videos, digital images and drawings. They are holiday themed, but not Family-Channel cuddly. Think more, well, dysfunctional.

Among the new features this year is a live magic show from local magicians Mike Baron and Annie—“white bunnies and doves included.” I’m very intrigued by the “Christmas Disaster Generator” by Jason Nelson (“Generate the ultimate Christmas disaster with none of those pesky life-changing side effects.”) And a Santalope video installation by Andrew K. Erdos will be on view in Squeaky’s Upstairs Installation Gallery.

The fun kicks off at 8 p.m. and runs until 11 at Squeaky, 712 Main Street. Tickets are $4 for members—cheap!—and just $6 for non-members.

And you can feel good in knowing that you’re supporting one of WNY’s most vital arts organizations. In the past month alone, Squeaky Wheel has hosted a screening of works by young filmmakers involved with the Buffalo Youth Media Institute, shown and installation and screening by media artist Mili Pradhan, and premiered newly produced films as part of Channels: Stories From the Niagara Frontier.

Squeaky’s website has more info on these and other upcoming events, and also offers membership info. Whether you’re a budding filmmaker, or simply a patron of the arts, supporting this local media resource is an ideal gift for yourself and others. It’s naughty and nice, and Santa will thank you.
