Buffalo Spree's Pizza Showdown
Welcome to Spree’s first WNY pizza tournament. We’ve used the March Madness model for this contest: a process of elimination that starts with sixteen venues, then narrows down to eight, then four, then two, culminating in a final winner. We’re not the first to do this—in February, Every Day with Rachael Ray organized a nationwide tournament that included sixty-four pizzerias and regional winners, as well as an overall winner (Pizzeria Blanco in Phoenix). We felt sixteen was a fair and practical number for the Buffalo area; you’ll find the gamut here, from thick, gooey, Buffalo-style slices to elegant Neopolitan offerings to everything in between. Even a pod!
Nonetheless, we are also aware that there are hundreds of pizza places throughout the area—so apologies in advance if your favorite is not included in the sixteen. Initially, the six Buffalo Spree food writers traveled to each venue, but for the final four, they got together as a group to choose the two semi-finalists and champion.
Every pizzeria was tested on their cheese and pepperoni option. Who would you pick?
Every day this week BuffaloSpree.com will reveal a portion of the competition on our Consuming Passions blog. Leave your comments and have the opportunity to win our Pizza Showdown contest! Those with the most correct answers will be entered in a drawing to win gear designed for making the perfect pizza at home.
The winning pie in our Pizza Showdown is revealed in the November issue of Buffalo Spree.

I'm a big fan of Zetti's, originally in the University Plaza, but now with two additional locations on Elmwood at Bidwell and Maple Road near the entrance to UB. He has many types on the menu, but I find myself going there for the thin crust pizza with interesting topping combinations. The place also bats 1.000 when it comes to consistency. They never miss a beat. Always good.

You only have 8 joints listed...are the other 8 yet to come?
I sure hope you include Leonardi's, Bozanna's, Pizza Junction and Mister Pizza. I like get from different places so I don't get bored. :)
And while you're at it, I hope you include Imperial (Patrick Kane's favorite pizzeria), Abbott and Bella's. These are three of the southtowns best).
Why can't we leave a comment for the Pizza Oven Vs. Buzzy's section?
We think that is fixed now. Sorry!
If you want a great pizza for a Saturday night try the Mustard Seed in South Dayton -- the sunflower crust is worth making the reservation & the drive. Unfortunately Nettie & crew won't qualify for your competition because it is only a Saturday choice.
Hi Joyce,
Alberto Rey wrote about the Mustard Seed in the 11/09 Spree. It sounds like a fabulous spot.

A second year passes without recognition given to one of the finest pizza places in the Buffalo area, Metro Pizza Co. on Clinton Street! This location has been around for 17 years! They deliver to a plethora of well-known Buffalo businesses. The beeeeeesssst pizza ever. There are people miles away that wish for another location because of the taste. Buffalo Spree needs to check it out.
