UPDATED: Buffalo Spree announces move to Raleigh-Durham, NC
By Julia Burke
Buffalo Spree magazine is pleased to announce its plans to relocate from Western New York to the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area of North Carolina, effective May 2013. While the magazine has proudly covered the arts, cultural activities, entertainment, and food of the Buffalo/Niagara region for thirty years, its editors agree that the time for change has come.
"We will continue to deliver the outstanding coverage of Western New York that our readers have come to expect," Elizabeth Licata, editor in chief, explains. "We'll just be doing it from our Raleigh office."
The move will ultimately benefit readers, Licata avers, remarking that "absence makes the heart grow fonder, after all" and adding, "While our commited, long-term relationship with beautiful Western New York is as strong as ever, every great relationship needs space."
Christa Glennie Seychew, Spree's food editor, says she anticipates no changes to the magazine's dynamic coverage of Buffalo and Niagara's food scene. "In fact, the Raleigh-Durham area has many of the same restaurants as Buffalo––Applebee's, Fridays, and Chipotle, just to name a few. I even heard they're getting a Trader Joe's, just like we are!" Asked if the move would hamper the magazine's commitment to celebrating local businesses, Seychew noted that the "local" trend has become "tired and played out," and "people are ready for some consistency" in their culinary choices.
Why move now? Spree's staff decided the time had come after looking out the window yet again at another 32-degree day with a chance of "wintry mix," then reading the calendar and noting that it was, in fact, spring. "Seriously? Ain't nobody got time for that," associate editor Julia Burke was heard muttering shortly before the move was announced. "Raleigh-Durham is just sunnier and nicer," Licata noted. "Who wouldn't want to live there? We don't have to be located in Buffalo to love Buffalo, and I think our readers will embrace this exciting transition."
EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for playing, everyone. Happy April Fool's Day!
