It's in the Bag
This red snakeskin number was donated by Buffalo News foodie Janice Okun.
Last night's Handbag Happy Hour was a the type of event that I know I'd like to go to more often—especially if I can possibly get a gorgeous handbag out of the deal (Luxury Gods, are you listening?). The energy and participants at the $50/ticket fundraiser, the first sponsored by Buffalo Spree to benefit AIDS Community Services, were exciting.
Volunteers mingled, wearing coordinating outfits and modeling bags that were to be included in the live auction portion of the evening. They were cheerful, hard-working, and plentiful. The food at Salvatore's was classic fare (you know those slices of pepperoni with a squirt of soft cheese? Yum!), and the goods were really good.
Silent auction items donated by a generous swath of individuals, organizations and boutiques had everyone plotting and planning on how to be the high bidder and take home that prized [Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Marc Jacobs, Ferragamo, etc.]. A "vegan" bag by Samsara/Matt & Nat, donated by Anna Grace caught my eye, as did an adorable black & white polka dot weekender by Murval, donated by Initially Yours in Snyder. A snakeskin clutch by Kooba, donated by Tyori boutique, may not have been practical...but SO gorgeous.
Items up for bid did not just include bags, either. Dress by Design, the clever concept shop in Allentown, auctioned off $250 worth of their custom-made goods. Someone got a great deal. (Look for more on these practical, yet inspirational ladies in the May issue of Spree.)
And you have to pity Rob Lucas (who filled in when fellow radio personality Sue O'Neil of Star 102.5 had to bow out of emcee duties at the last minute). He made some great attempts to lure women from the hors d'oeuvres tables into the fray, but, seriously, dude, we don't eat and shop at the same time. Wandering around trying to place bids and guard our potential purchase while balancing a plate of Artichoke Francaise or mini Steak in the Grass sandwich would really cramp our style!
