Liberty or death!
You might have noticed that I’ve credited my husband many times as the arbiter of taste in our home; he of the design eye, he of the color sense—and he of the Elle Décor subscription. That’s right. Hubby pores over its pages each month, stashing it in his bedside drawer, much like other guys might stow their porn. We like to shop together for certain things. Recently, we’ve been jonesing for new bedding: something affordable, fun, attractive, and non-emasculating-yet-decorative.
DH is also somewhat of an anglophile, so when he noticed—in Vanity Fair—that Target was introducing a line of home and fashion items licensed from the famous British retailer Liberty of London he was not just excited; he informed me that we would be spending Sunday, March 14, the line’s debut, in hot retail pursuit! Many big boxes have been striving for a designer aesthetic, but Target is arguably the pioneer, having snagged such names as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Sami Hayk, and—early on—Michael Graves.
At a party on Saturday, I found that others were just as excited. Fashion-savvy Spree contributor Julie Wesolowski was even setting her alarm so she could snag the frocks, tops, and bags that were sure to sell out!
We ended up at not just one, but THREE Targets. At the Niagara Falls Boulevard location, we ran into Spree husband-and-wife photography team kc and Gail Kratt. Gail claimed a love of the famously floral prints; this was borne out by her shopping cart filled with Liberty-imbued umbrellas, hats, and other accessories. kc seemed ready to sport a shirt of the bold fabric—too bad there were none in stock.
A woman zoomed by with her cart piled high—seemed like she was grabbing everything in sight. Later, the preponderance of Liberty of London for Target items on eBay skyrocketed—already selling well over retail. Then, on Monday, I was getting made up by the fabulous Andy “Blade” Cedeño for a Spree May story. (You can see his work in our upcoming Beauty Book as well.) And guess what? Liberty is everywhere! Yes, MAC cosmetics has (drumroll) a new line of Liberty of London makeup.
We ended up doing quite well with this new Liberty line; our bed is now adorned with the Wavy quilt, and Hubby said a small decorative box (same pattern, different colorway), was a “must-have.” Blade confessed he hadn’t been able to resist an adorable piggy-bank, but I found I couldn’t go quite that far.
