Spree Style with Erin Habes: Mass Appeal 2011

Spree Style with Erin Habes: Mass Appeal 2011

Mass Appeal, an annual fashion event that reverberates throughout the region, will take place at the Elmwood Lafayette Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 18. Palladian Health will present this, the fourth installment of Mass Appeal.

A fundraiser for The Elmwood Village Association, Mass Appeal 2011’s theme of “transformation” intends to focus on the many improvements made to the Elmwood area by the Association. Elmwood Village has truly become an ideal example of the term “hub”, and is a vital component to our city, a city on the rise. This community has become a thriving scene that is—all at once—quirky, trendy, diverse, and a tad bit "granola" (in a good way).

The transformation theme will be revealed throughout the show, as the opening number will express depth and movement through a beautiful contemporary dance piece. With stunning choreography by Joseph Cipolla from Configuration Dance and costumes by Mallory Stoos, the senior artist at MAC makeup, the high-octane and vibrant creation will play with the audience's senses.

A fresh new approach to the lineup will take the audience on a journey down Elmwood Avenue, showcasing the eclectic mix of the fashion district’s boutiques, including Anatomy, Splash Panic, Anna Grace, Second Chic, Urban Threads, and many more. The show will feature the high-end, trendy, and urban styles that are true to each boutique’s unique look and feel.

Embracing a new generation of change, the portion of the show featuring designer t-shirts always represents the youth of our culture, showcasing up-and-coming t-shirt designers such as Eurostyle, Positive Approach, Derailleur, and the well established WNY brand, Celebrate Buffalo. This year's retrospective embraces rebel youth fashions from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 80s. Paired with Buffalo’s own New Era “EK” Cap Collection, these style renegades may steal the show.

Stitching and sewing, local designers have been at work creating a special collection for the Mass Appeal stage. Buffalo State College students Jenna Murray and Tony Bruce bring an element of youth and refinement, but Bruce will kick it up a notch by bringing a “punk-nation” vibe to the stage. Local designer and boutique owner Sebastiana will take an elegant approach to design showcasing her Italian roots, and artist Molly Hoeltke will take on the show's transformation theme with a “shape shifters” collection. Last but not least, Angel from Sai One expects to leave your eyes open wide and your jaw agape with a very raw collection.

The show wil conclude with its well known “wearable” art collection, where local artists are given the challenge to working with Mass Appeal sponsors and Elmwood Village businesses in order to create a piece of wearable art made from the materials found in their partnered store or inspired by their partnered brand. This year the event has collaborations with Palladian Health, Vitaminwater Zero/We Never Close, The Treehouse, Can Can Candy, D’Avolio, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Rumor has it that last year’s winner, Amy Hartman, is working with Can Can Candy and just ordered 1700 gumballs (see a speak peek of her sketch below).

The show is just around the corner and tickets are selling fast. Join the mission, support local, and allow yourself to think big ... Mass Appeal big.
