Spree Style with Erin Habes: Music is Art
Sketch by Ali Eagen
At Music is Art, the theme is “Dress To Express.” The event will showcase over 50 bands, 100 artists, and a new element of fashion. The fashion component will focus on fabric manipulation and sculptural techniques as a way of constructing larger-than-life garment installations.
By using the basic a-line skirt as a foundation, Ali Eagen and I will be curating three-dimensional garments that express volume, mass, and space. Villa Maria and Buffalo State fashion students, along with select local artists, will be exploring creative ideas reflecting the festivals’ theme. The students will use a range of materials including fabric, recyclables, old records, cassette tapes, and paper.
The garments will provide an aspect of transformation that will be revealed over the duration of the festival concluding with a grand finale. The show is in a new location this year, just steps away from the Albright Knox Gallery in Delaware Park. The grandiose setting will enhance the concept of an immobile fashion show, allowing for the integration of art and fashion on a dramatic, larger-than-life scale.
“We're super excited about this year's "Dress To Express" festival theme, inviting a whole new group of creative minds into the Music is Art family. I'm finding that using the human form as a canvas for artistic expression in an endlessly fascinating concept! Erin and Ali's knowledge, guidance and coordination skills are key to making these ideas a reality, I think you'll all be truly impressed!” - Robby Takac
Below are some of the images used to inspire this concept. Above is one of Ali Eagen's sketches for this component of MiA's 2011 event, taking place September 17th.
