Finally, summer sun is here and for most of us, not only does that mean sunny days and breezy nights, but also parties, picnics, trips and more. Marykate and Jess (the gals who volunteered to let me dress them up) and I recently went to check out summer gear available from the local boutique scene. We landed in Modern Nostalgia on Hertel Avenue in North Buffalo. Every time I go into this store I find things to fall in love with. Originally I was only going to showcase the girls in an outfit or two but we ended up finding so many lovely pieces we hung out and dressed up for hours. Our goal was to find easy summer pieces that can be worn multiple ways.
Maxi dresses are always a sure thing in my book, so naturally the first piece I handed off to Jess was this lovely gray maxi dress by Tart Collections, We went easy and casual by pairing it with a beaded yellow necklace and linen scarf. When all was said and done, the outfit became a no fuss way to look chic in the heat.
Shift dresses are another favorite of mine for summer. One of my favorite ways to style a simple shift dress is with a pair of loafers. There is something so classic but extremely modern about the combination of this cut of dress and loafers. Plus this simple pairing menas you can always look pulled together on days when you just don’t feel like digging through your closet. For me, it is a day or night go-to ensemble. I found this yellow Lucca Couture dress for Mary Kate that would look lovely with a pair of off-white or silver loafers.
And last but not least, my favorite summer staple is a slouchy button up shirt. A basic loose shirt cannot only be worn from season to season, but also from year to year. You can’t go wrong, so invest in varying colors and have a variety on hand. For night, deep rich gem tones stand tall. A big color this season is emerald. For those summer days, look for an off-white or light blue shirt. Though keep in mind that the best color is always whatever color you like!
The true key to the ensemble above working so well is the fabric being loose and not constricting. If you want to look chic, even though there is no structure to these shirts, try using carefully chosen accessories. Jess had on a daytime look, so I styled her in a blue linen button up and drawstring pants. To give the outfit some sophistication I paired it with a collared necklace and high heels. The finishing accessories really enhance the clothing, moving the outfit from simple and comfortable to chic and comfortable.
The tough part about summer fashion is finding looks that are stylish but also comfortable and easy in the summer sun. The looks we found at Modern Nostalgia are perfect for these summer days. Don’t be afraid of those loose button down shirts or maxi dresses, they can be the key to being the best dressed—and most comfortable—at summer events.
