Some might say it’s the most wonderful time of the year and I certainly agree. During Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, I had the pleasure of sitting in the front row at the FTL MODA and Style360 Spring 2015 show, which was Style360's tenth annual showcase. It featured womenswear designers Kami Shade, Jaime Elyse, and Gianni Tolentino.
Disco is not dead as we see in the collection presented by Kami Shade (lead photo). Models sparkled from head to toe with sequined embellishments on every piece, from the pants and overalls to dresses and blazers. A favorite of mine was a pair of multicolored sequined pants paired with an ivory blazer. The designer’s accented garments complemented the models, who looked like they were on their way to Studio 54. Kami Shade prides herself as a designer able to create pieces for every shape and size.
Here come the brides! Jaime Elyse redefined the modern bride during the presentation of her collection. Rocking the runway, brides transformed long evening gowns into cocktail dresses within the blink of an eye (and a little assistance from a maid of honor). The collection conveyed the idea of a contemporary wedding day—formal, conservative, and structured in the beginning followed by wild, edgy, and ready to party looks toward the end.
Italian designer Gianni Tolentino emulated the essence of what Fashion Week is to me. From strong, bold colors, cuts, and compositions, Tolentino helps to define couture. This collection of pieces featured designs using heavy layers and textures. Having worked at legendary fashion houses such as Dior and Pucci, Tolentino brings dramatic elements to his collections with a little taste of his past. These are often risky ideas in modern times, but he is able to enhance the feminine figure and bring his works of art to life on the runway.
Surrounded by some of the industry’s top tastemakers and stylists, FTL Moda showcased designers who brought fearless colors and design concepts to Spring 2015.
