Lanvin at Paris FW
As much as Ungaro had its points (price points, possibly) in the ready-to-wear class, Lanvin reminded us that yes, Virginia, this is Paris. Alber Elbaz, the man behind the label, used ruffles and draping and terms like “dripping,” "synthetic," and "Velveeta cheese," to show us that modern, eclectic, and piled-on can be heart stoppingly beautiful. A few of his pieces made me think of reaching down and coming up with hands full of Alladin’s treasure, or of imaginations from the Odyssey blended with a Chanel bag. Yum yum.
Another reason to respect the man is his understanding of why things work: "I don’t think that you can write music if you don’t know how to play an instrument. You have to know the basics, then you can go forward"," Elbaz stated in a New York Magazine interview about this collection. And who else likes Lanvin? Well, we all should. Michelle Obama’s style guru, Ikram Goldberg, was sitting front and center at the show.
