Clapton and Beck pair up in TO

I'm not sure there's a magazine that seems less consequential in the internet age than Rolling Stone. It certainly can't break any news, and seems to run a constant risk of either ignoring older artists, or spending too much time on them. And for every talent like Matt Taibi, there's an acne-d hack like Rob Sheffield.

But every so often, they pull out something fascinating, and lately, it's been extended features on aged legends like Ginger Baker and Lemmy. I haven't read this month's cover story on Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, but I have to say, right on, RS.

For this is the kind of thing the magazine can still do better than anyone—bring together talent, and craft a serious piece.

Interestingly—for me—while I'm not a huge fan of either, I'm heading to Toronto to see them perform together Sunday night at the Air Canada Centre. And I'm expecting something pretty extraordinary. They are the epitome of "guitar gods," and the idea of them collaborating on a short tour is pretty thrilling. The plan, apparently, is that Beck does a set, followed by Clapton, and the show finishes with a joint effort.

It's one of those you-gotta-be-there musical events, and it should be a packed ACC. Cheers to Rolling Stone, then, for recognizing its significance.
