The weekend in movies 12/10
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Playing at Maple Ridge; Market Arcade Dipson; McKinley Mall; Transit, Elmwood, Galleria, Hollywood Regals; Flix
Fox swooped in and saved the CS Lewis franchise from an unceremonious death at the hands of Disney and a not so great box office take with the second installment of the franchise, Prince Caspian. So far, I've loved the worlds created, building upon the novels I read as a kid in elementary school, but also retaining their magic. Here's wishing audiences come in droves, because I'd like to see the final four books get an adaptation—unfortunately my hopes aren't too high.
Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer
Playing at Eastern Hills Dipson
Having its debut at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, the story of New York's infamous governor finds its way to Buffalo. Getting good press—and surprisingly making the Oscar shortlist for best feature doc at the 2011 event—it's in-depth focus sheds light on the circus through news footage and interviews with Spitzer himself.
The Tourist
Playing at Maple Ridge; Market Arcade Dipson; Transit, Elmwood, Galleria, Hollywood, Quaker Regals; Flix; Transit Drive-In
Unfortunately, The Tourist appears to be an obvious thriller with its share of twists and turns, utilizing the star power of Depp and Jolie to sell tickets. (Why no love for Bettany? Guess his genre work of late bumped him off the A-list.) The shining light, however, is the fact this marks director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's return behind the camera after his debut The Lives of Others. I want to see it for that fact alone.
