The weekend in movies 5/21
Here and There
Playing at HD Video Cafe; Screening Room Cinema Cafe (select days and times)
An interesting release schedule here in Buffalo, Here and There sees a few screenings at the Screening Room Cinema Cafe and the HD Video Cafe—a place I've never heard of until now. Looks like a nice little comedy dealing with a New Yorker making his way to Serbia for monetary purposes, finding meaning to his life in the process.
MacGruber
Playing at Market Arcade; Maple Ridge; Elmwood, Transit, Galleria, Quaker, Hollywood Regals
Some are saying that MacGruber is the best SNL skit-turned-film since Wayne's World. I guess since nothing great has come to the big screen from Lorne Michaels and company in the last decade-plus, that isn't saying much. But it did garner some strong talent—say what you will about Val Kilmer, Madmartigan is the man—so I won't write it off yet. Will I see it in theaters though? I'm thinking not.
The Secret in Their Eyes
Playing at Amherst Dipson
The Argentinian film that won an Oscar in a stunning upset over Michael Haneke's masterpiece and mane of hair arrives in Buffalo. Concerning a man looking to solve a murder committed years before, it is garnering raves from critics, winning awards, and even getting the popular vote from IMDB visitors, ranking No. 184 on the Top 250. I really wish I had been able to make the press screening earlier in the week, but I'm hoping to catch it at the Amherst soon.
Shrek Forever After
Playing at Market Arcade; Maple Ridge; Elmwood, Transit (IMAX), Galleria, Quaker, Hollywood Regals; Transit Drive-In
Even if I didn't have to drive to Cleveland last Saturday morning, I still don't think I would have gone to see the advance screening of Shrek Forever After. The first in the series never resonated with me as much as it seems to have across the world, and as a result, I ignored parts 2 and 3. It is in glorious IMAX 3D, and supposedly the final chapter to the titular ogre's saga, but the biggest news I've heard concerning it lies with the disgusting $20 ticket price in NYC. Have fun getting that second mortgage to take the kids out.
The Square
Playing at Eastern Hills Dipson
This thriller made the festival rounds last year and is finally seeing a limited release in the States. In it, the lead's mistress brings him a bag of cash and his life begins to unravel as a result.
