Spree Theater with Darwin McPherson: So You're Thinking about Dance
If dancing is on your mind, November is a good month to get your groove on. All month long, interesting dance steps are crossing the stage.
So You Think You Can Dance
Shea’s Performing Arts Center, November 9
The tour featuring the top ten finalists from season nine of So You Think You Can Dance just kicked off this week in San Diego. In just a couple of weeks, they’ll hit Buffalo! The Fox television reality competition series has been a leading proponent of dance around the country and is a must-see for members of WNY’s theater community.
This year, two dynamic ballet dancers, Eliana Girard and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, won the title of America’s Favorite Dancers (female and male). They rose to the top of a diverse field that included ballroom dancers, a martial artist, and a “hip-hop animator,” along with the usual selection of contemporary dancers. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the champions, with Audrey, Cole, Cyrus, George, Lindsay, Tiffany, Will, and Witney, do what they do best.
The So You Think You Can Dance 2012 Tour arrives at Shea’s on Friday, November 9 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $48.55-$75.25. Call 1-800-745-3000.

Pilobolus
Center for the Arts, November 17
You can tell Pilobolus Dance Theatre is a different kind of company just by looking at them. The “modern performance company,” as they describe themselves, collaborates with diverse artists like Art Spiegelman, OK Go, and Radiolab, to create dance pieces that use the human body as a medium for expression. This striking aesthetic has won the group national recognition and numerous awards for their innovative and educational efforts.
Founded in 1971, Pilobolus is inspired by its namesake (a phototropic fungus that thrives in farmyards) “to grow toward the light, expanding and refining its unique methods of collective creative production to assemble a repertoire of over 100 choreographic works.”
Pilobolus brings the art of movement to the UB Center for the Arts on Saturday, November 17 at 8 pm. Get there early for a pre-performance talk at 7:15 pm. Tickets are $16.50-$36.50. Call 1-888-223-6000.
The Nutcracker
Shea’s Performing Arts Center, November 24 and 25
You know the holidays are upon us when Neglia Ballet Artists, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Shea’s get together for their annual presentation of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. This year marks their fourth consecutive collaboration to tell the classic story of a young girl’s Christmas Eve dream of a Nutcracker Prince and a battle against the Mouse King.

Last year’s stars, NBA artistic director and principal dancer Sergio Neglia, Argentinean ballerina Silvina Vaccarelli, and Irish Classical Theatre Company’s Vincent O’Neill, are scheduled to return. Awesome sets by Lynne Koscielniak and over one hundred costumes designed by Donna Massimo complete the production. With a supporting cast that includes about fifty young dancers from WNY, The Nutcracker is a perfect way to incorporate ballet into the lives of young audiences as well as celebrate the season.
Enjoy the magic of The Nutcracker at Shea’s on Saturday, November 24 at 7 pm or Sunday, November 25 at 2 pm. Tickets are $40.50-$83.50. Call 1-800-745-3000.
