Artpark Summer Solstice celebration

A popular festival has inspired a new celebration at Artpark—and it’s packed with exciting programming. Artpark hosts an all-day Summer Solstice celebration on June 17; the park grounds and the Mainstage Theater will be the settings for a long list of exciting activities, including the 7th annual Fairy House Festival and a performance by Lehrer Dance

The festivities kick off at noon with the Fairy House Festival. Art-making activities include potion making, face painting, and the opportunity for participants to build their own small “fairy dwellings” in the woods. Local artists, community groups, schools, families, and individuals are teaming up to design and construct the whimsical attractions.

Additional events include live music by Slyboots Circus, spoken word, dance, aerial acrobatics, and other performances. Guests will be able to wander through the park’s lush grounds, mixing and mingling with the performers and magical tableaus.

Following the Fairy House Festival is a parade into Artpark’s Mainstage Theater, where Lehrer Dance takes the stage at 7 p.m. This internationally touring professional dance company is known for a repertoire that combines athleticism, artistry, and accessibility. Dance Magazine has commented, “Lehrer Dance took the house not so much by storm as by quantum physics. Jon Lehrer’s strikingly original choreography transformed the stage into an energy field of super-charged particles.”

After Lehrer Dance, an after-party features refreshments and Pyromancy, culminating in a lantern-led moon dance into the woods at midnight.

The Summer Solstice Festival is created and directed by Kate LoConti and Jon Lehrer, two of Western New York’s most respected artists in their respective fields of professional theater and dance.
