LRW Preview: Weekend Musts

Third and fourth courses from Sample's LRW offering

Here at Spree we hope you have taken full advantage of the many meals available at the special $20.12 price during Local Restaurant Week. The weekend is here, and many of the best and most popular restaurants are booked, but we wanted to share some of our favorite date-appropriate LRW selections for the weekend.

My first choice is Sample. I've been eating at this restaurant for years, so I may be partial, but the Chef's Tasting, offered during LRW for only $20.12, has to be THE BEST value offered at any LRW location. Multiple courses featuring dozens of preparations mean you will not only leave full, but satisfied. This is an especially good LRW selection if you are on a date with someone you don't know well—enjoying so many different things together at exactly the same time can provide great conversation and lovely shared experience. Scroll down to the Chef's Tasting portion of the Sample menu and you'll be able to read the offering in its entirety. Please note: this may not be for you if you are a picky eater.

Shango is really lovely, and newbies shouldn't assume that all of the food in this New Orleans-inspired bistro is spicy. Brunch is an extremely popular offering, but the dinner menu, peppered with sustainable fish and locally-sourced produce and meats, is no less special. Chef Jim Guarino's LRW menu is three courses, with a soup or salad starter, the choice of one of four entrees—blacked tuna, macaroni and cheese, Flat Iron steak, or seafood andouille pasta— and a slice of spice pumpkin bread pudding or apple pear pie for dessert. Shango recently won Spree's Best Dessert category in our annual Best of WNY, so make sure you save room for it!

Betty's may be known for breakfast, but since receiving their liquor license a number of years ago—and then expending their lounge area—the Allentown restaurant had developed a reputation as a dinner spot. Very friendly to people with dietary restrictions, it's a nice place to go if you struggle to find food that meets your needs in other restaurants. For Restaurant Week, only $20.12 will net you a beverage, bread service, a garden salad, and an extensive menu of entrees including selections such as Yellowfin Tuna, Trout Provencal, chicken pot pie, Coffee-crusted Pork Tenderloin, and several more. You can examine the menu yourself by visiting their page on the LRW website.

Black Rock Kitchen & Bar is bustling all the time, but it adds to the feel of this very cool and fun Amherst Street restaurant. If you haven't been, LRW is the perfect time to go. $20.12 includes a green salad and the choice of an entree from a list that changes every day. This allows BRK&B to offer a variety of dishes to their diehard fans over the course of the week, and insures fresh and imaginative creations, as anyone would expect from Chef Dunbar Berdine.

There are a ton of other solid choices on the LRW list, so make a few calls and try to score a reservation. Have a good and delicious weekend!
