Ontario's Cuvée weekend provides unique wine tasting opportunities
March in Western New York couldn’t feel any further from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the luxurious decadence of Napa Valley tasting rooms, yet this weekend the Niagara Community Foundation and Wine Country Ontario are bringing a little slice of both to the region with Cuvée 2012.
The event is centered on the Cuvée Awards Gala held at the Fallsview Casino Resort Friday March 2nd and extends throughout the weekend with the Cuvée En Route passport program (PDF).
The Gala—dubbed “The Oscars of Canadian Wine”—a black-tie optional fundraising event, will be the place to be this Friday as the Ontario wine industry’s owners, winemakers, and supporters gather to celebrate the best Ontario wines of the year while sampling dishes created by the chefs of Niagara’s finest restaurants. This year’s lineup includes Chef Jason Parsons of Peller Estates, Justin Downes of The Restaurant at Vineland Estates Winery, Chef Ray Taylor of the Fallsview Casino Resort, and many more.
The spotlight of the evening will be on the wines, though, as dozens of wineries will be pouring their best stuff including the award winners announced earlier in the evening. The opportunity to taste this many wines while rubbing shoulders with the winemakers and the rest of the industry is rare and has the potential for creating lifelong wine memories.
Tickets to the Cuvée Gala are $175, but if that’s not in your budget the Cuvée En Route Passport ($30) is just as unique an opportunity (see link above) to taste while traveling from winery to winery on the Niagara Peninsula. Participating wineries will pour award-winning wines in addition to special offerings ranging from vertical flights like Thirty Bench Wine Maker’s 2008-2010 Small Lot Gewürztraminers to rare horizontal tastings like Peninsular Ridge’s 2002 vintage flight of Arcanum, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc.
Cuvée Weekend tickets are available at www.cuvee.ca or by calling 905-684-8688. Cuvée en Route admission can be purchased separately for $30.00 per person, via the same outlets, or at participating wineries on Cuvée Weekend.
