West Side = Foodie heaven

For decades, West Side residents have known that a quick dash between Grant Street’s Guercio’s (250 Grant St., 882-7935) and Lorigo’s (185 Grant St., 885-3623) would allow you to pick up enough items to make dinner. In recent years, adding a stop at Elmwood’s Lexington Co-op (807 Elmwood Ave., 886-2667) meant you could check off a good percentage of your weekly shopping list.
Today, the district is also home to the nationally lauded Penzeys Spices (783 Elmwood Ave., 887-9777), specialty olive oil shop D’Oliva (830 Elmwood Ave., 783-9977), and Five Points Bakery (426 Rhode Island St., 884-8888), the bread shop that boasts a hyperlocal selection of farm-fresh pantry staples. Now it seems that homecooks can find nearly everything their hearts desire within a few blocks. Better yet, those of us who fancy ourselves a serious foodies can find gourmet goodies we previously had to order online or drive to Toronto for. Thanks to this recent influx of tasty businesses, olive oil with terroir, local hand-milled flour, and Ceylon cinnamon can now be found within blocks of one another.
Now, if we could just lure a fishmonger to the neighborhood …
