Western New York (WNY) – Opening September 8 at Wine on Third Gallery, Artist-provocateur Michael Beam first presented his work, en masse, to the Western New York community in the Ides of March exhibition, at Wine on Third in Niagara Falls, NY in 2012; and his creative endeavors continued with 2014’s ne plus ultra, A Ten-Year Survey exhibition and performance at Big Orbit Gallery in Buffalo, NY.  And now, with a triumphant return to Wine on Third, the journey darkens with his next artistic presentation—The Growlery.   This exhibition will feature approximately 25 multi-media works created between 2014-2019.

A Place of Refuge--Charles Dickens is credited with the first known use of the term “growlery” in his 1852-53 novel Bleak House.  Growlery is a place of refuge or sanctuary, akin to a guarded den or lair, for use while one is out of sorts on in an ill humor.  Like Dickens’s novel, Beam’s exhibition has many characters and several sub-plots.  The extended labels, presented by an omniscient narrator, offer prologue to the visual amalgamations on display. Beam, however, sees the Growlery as a low-brow cerebral safe-harbor where the spark of creativity and free associations of inventiveness freely flow.

An award winning artist, author, curator, educator and public speaker, Michael J. Beam holds a Masters of Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (1998) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California University of Pennsylvania (1992).   He has been presented with public and private acquisition awards, commendations and critical reviews from The River Front Times, St. Louis, MO; Art Voice, Buffalo, NY and Dugent Publishers, Miami, FL.  Beam has exhibited his work in group and solo exhibitions across the Midwest and East coast.  During his tenure in Western New York, Beam has participated in many exhibitions and contributed numerous works to important non-profit regional arts fundraisers.   Most recently, Beam was awarded the 2018 Inaugural “Curatorial Achievement Trailblazer of the Arts” Award by Buffalo’s Art Services Initiative.

The artist’s work can be found in public and private collections in Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA; St. Louis, MO; New York, NY and Washington D.C.  His work also resides in private collections across the Buffalo/Niagara, NY region. His comprehensive studio website is forthcoming.
