Opening May 7: Castellani Art Museum Presents
New Niagara Falls Paintings by Thomas Kegler
From May 7, 2017 through January 21, 2018, the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University will host Thomas Kegler: Painting Niagara. Harkening back to the Hudson River School of painting, artist and educator Thomas Kegler will lend his Niagara, Psalms 84:11, an eight foot panoramic painting of the Horseshoe Falls of Niagara. The quiet and contemplative works in this exhibition include 15 plein air paintings and related studies as well as works from the Castellani Art Museum collection.
The exhibition opens with a reception at the CAM from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Thomas Kegler will give a talk about the exhibition and his artistic process.
Excerpts from the most comprehensive instructional documentary video ever made on the landscape painting techniques of “indirect painting” used by the old masters will also be included in the exhibition. This ground-breaking film presents the creation of Niagara, Psalms 84:11 over a period of two years. Over 40 drawings and paintings laid the groundwork in preparation for this expansive work.
Niagara, Psalms 84:11 endeavors to share the beauty of one of the world’s great natural wonders while evoking awareness and concern for the fragility of our natural environment. A presentation by Kegler, Buffalo/Niagara Riverkeeper and the WNY Land Conservancy is being planned for fall 2017.
This exhibition is partially funded by the New York Council on the Arts with support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. For more information, please contact Mary Helen Miskuly at 716-286-8294.
