Hot 5: June 2012 / Luminato festival

"Einstein on the Beach"

Luminato Festival

We don’t usually stray outside of Western New York in the Hot 5, but Toronto’s Luminato Festival is worth the rule-breaking. Since launching in 2007, Luminato has become one of North America’s premier art festivals, a wide-ranging mix of music, dance, and theater. Highlights of the fest, running from June 8 to 17, include a new production of Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach, a multimedia retelling of La Belle et la Bete, and, most thrillingly, a tribute to late singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle at Massey Hall on June 15. The lineup includes her wildly talented children, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, her sisters Anna and Jane, the legendary Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn, and others. Oh, and if you’re seeking another entertainment option a short drive away, the Rochester International Jazz Festival, running from June 22 to 30, has what might be its finest lineup yet: Norah Jones, Steve Martin, Diana Krall, and Bonnie Raitt. (See rochesterjazz.com for the full list.) June in the Buff is packed, but these are two out-of-town musts.
