2011 Farmers' Market Guide

A guide to the locations and operating hours of Erie and Niagara County farmers' markets

kc kratt

Many of our region’s farmers’ markets open this month. It is still very early in the growing season, but artisan foodstuffs, eggs, meat, and early spring vegetables—such as asparagus—are available. If you’re lucky, you frequent the kind of market where foraged items that taste of damp earth and chilly spring winds are sold. Ramps and fiddleheads are a fleeting but delicious addition to any dinner table.

Since 1994, the USDA has reported a dramatic increase in the number of farmers markets nationwide. In the last decade alone the count rose from 2,863 to 6,132. Clearly, knowing where your food comes from and supporting your local economy at its roots has become something of a trend.

Even if you wait until late June, when crops begin to fill market stands in abundance, we encourage you to shop at your local farmers’ market as often as your schedule will allow. To encourage regular visitation and exploration, we’ve compiled a list of Erie and Niagara County markets for you, our readers. Among them are bustling, flea-market style venues, quiet church-parking-lot-style set-ups, and full-blown farmers-only markets. Try a few on for size and find the one that suits you best.
