A guide to WNY/Buffalo-area CSAs

Christa Glennie Seychew

There may be nothing finer than produce just picked, smelling of the earth, and warm from the sun. For those of you who find comfort, good eating, and a sense of health and well-being in a lush basket of locally raised vegetables, a CSA is a blessing. Once you become a member of a CSA farm, a box or bag piled high with top-notch, full-flavored produce is earmarked for you every week during the growing season. Your investment in the farm—usually somewhere between $350-$500 per family per season— pays off in weekly dividends of tomatoes nearly bursting at their seams, slick, glossy-coated squash, and dusty, brightly colored rainbows of carrots. And it costs a fraction of what you’d pay at a farmers market. If you haven’t secured your membership yet, it may be tough to find an opening for this season, but winter shares are increasingly available, and it’s likely the wait list for next summer’s shares may have already begun.
