November 2011: Spree Insider
From a night out with the girls to an Elmwood Village extravaganza to one very large disco, November is packed with Spree-sponsored events.
Buffalo Spree’s second annual Girls Night Out on November 3 is an evening of shopping, cocktails, food, and fabulous feminine fun. Scheduled from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens (6461 Transit Rd., Depew), GNO offers attendees a chance to shop from some of Buffalo’s finest vendors. Jewelry, accessories, salon and beauty products, general gifts, handbags, and shoes will be on display. On top of shopping needs, there will be food, free giveaways, and a cash bar.
To make a great night even greater, all of the ticket proceeds will go directly to Child and Family Services at Haven House, which provides safe, confidential services in Buffalo for victims of domestic violence and their children. As Spree’s director of marketing and public relations Lori Johnson puts it, “It’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy a fun night out with your girls and start your holiday shopping, while supporting not only a local charity whose funds are much needed to support victims of domestic violence but also supporting a wide variety of our local businesses. Tickets are $15; to buy, visit buffalospree.com or call 783-9119, extension 2202.
The next day, another Buffalo celebration honors the achievements of local women. The Buffalo Niagara Partnership ATHENA Award Luncheon “honors individuals in our community who have attained and personified the highest level of professional excellence, demonstrated support for the goals of professional women, and provided significant and selfless assistance on their behalf,” says Buffalo Niagara Partnership events manager, Lindsey Dotson.
Since 1989, the Athena Award has honored over 250 women who have made Buffalo-Niagara even brighter. In addition, the KPMG Athena Young Professional Leadership Award will be given that afternoon to a woman who has shown great promise in her emerging career. The luncheon will be held on November 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Buffalo Niagara Marriott (1340 Millersport Hwy., Amherst). Tickets are $60 per individual and $600 for a table of eight. For info, visit www.thepartnership.org/events.
Also on November 4 is Mass Appeal, the Elmwood Village’s fourth annual blocks-long party. A fundraiser for the Elmwood Village Association, Mass Appeal “embraces the Elmwood Village to the fullest,” says organizer Erin Habes, buffalospree.com’s fashion blogger. “It touches on every creative avenue Elmwood has to offer.”
Salons and boutiques will be on hand, along with fashion from four local designers as well as local theater troupes and even “wearable art.” (Last year’s Mass Appeal featured a “coffee filter dress.”) Dance will be incorporated, too.
The event starts at 8 p.m., with doors at 7, and will last until 10. Attendees can attend an opening VIP party in the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church (875 Elmwood Ave.) at 7 p.m. or the after-party at 10. Tickets are $30 for admission and $125 for the VIP party. They are sold at www.elmwoodvillage.org and Wegmans.
On November 9, the March of Dimes Signature Chef’s Auction will kick off with an homage to the past: this year’s event theme is “A Taste of the Twenties.” From 6 to 10 p.m. at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center (Convention Center Plaza), every flapper from this side of paradise is encouraged to put on his or her best twenties attire for the chance to win “best dressed.” Levity aside, the culinary auction is raising money to benefit the local March of Dimes branch, whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births, and infant mortality. Featured at the event are tastings from the area’s finest chefs and restaurants and opportunities to bid on auction packages. For more info, call 691-3805.
Finally, November ends with the World’s Largest Disco, and as every Buffalonian knows, it’s a heckuva party—an annual chance to dust off those high-healed shoes and bell-bottoms and remember the time when Jimmy Carter was president and the Bee Gees were all the rage. Scheduled from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on November 26 at the Buffalo Convention Center, it’s a “great people-watching event,” says organizer Dave Pietrowski.
