Rio Negro II

Silo  city is the location for yet another exciting and ambitious art happening, this time organized by Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center. Rio Negro II is the brainchild of composer and multi-instrumentalist Douglas Ewart (above),  who, with his collaborators George Lewis and Douglas Repetto, has found a way to combine robotics and other technology with rainsticks and bamboo chimes for an amazing aural and visual experience. Think performing sculptures, then imagine these robotically controlled instruments in the eerie acoustic environment of a grain elevator. The name Rio Negro refers to an Amazon tributary that is the largest black-water river in the world. Accordingly, the sound installation employs stones, soil, bamboo, and leaves to further evoke the rainforest, as well as indigenous peoples and notions of blackness.
