August 2019 Summer Concerts

August 9

Bryan Adams & Billy Idol

FOR A CERTAIN GENERATION and subculture of Buffalonians, Billy Idol is synonymous with the mirror-enclosed dance floor of the late, great Continental; his early hit “Dancing with Myself” both mocked and celebrated the narcissism of the New Wave era, when sneering youth of all genders would spend hours on their hair, clothes, and makeup for a night on the town, entranced by their own refl ections. Those days may be gone, the club kids having long ago moved on to raising actual kids and currently dressing their grandchildren in Ramones onesies, but the song—like many of Idol’s MTV-fueled hits—has lost none of its pop power. Subsequent decades have brought endless greatest-hits compilations, dance remixes, the obligatory Behind the Music episode, a memoir, and even a camp-classic Christmas album. And he’s back (er, still) on the shed circuit, this month sharing a bill with fellow Eighties superstar and AOR staple, Bryan Adams. There’s a lot of overlap in their core audiences, who may be leaving the hair gel at home but will certainly be dancing once more—this time sans mirrors, and hardly by themselves.

—Ron Ehmke
