MUSIC

January 15

Shamarr Allen

courtesy of the artist

In a nice bit of poetic justice, you can at last catch an actual resident of the Ninth Ward in the Buffalo venue named for the New Orleans neighborhood, and during a month when our thoughts naturally turn to warmer climes, no less. Trumpeter, bandleader, and vocalist Shamarr Allen and his colleagues, “the Underdawgs,” are the real deal, embodying the spirit of twenty-first century NOLA with their genre-blind gumbo of sounds drawn from street-smart brass bands, hip hop, scrappy funk, electronics, turntablism, and good old fashioned audience-pleasing theatrics. This is exactly the kind of good time that the music lovers who scour Frenchmen Street in Faubourg Marigny every night dream of, and now it’s come to us. Make the most of the opportunity.

Ron Ehmke
