Opens February 5

Cookin’ at the Cookery

A buoyant celebration and career/comeback story of Alberta Hunter, Cookin’ at the Cookery features such memorable songs as “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “My Handy Man Ain’t Handy Anymore.” Directed by Victoria Pérez, the blues bio-musical features pianist George Caldwell (Ain’t Misbehavin’, Sophisticated Ladies) leading an onstage musical quartet in the first WNY production of this show since its sold-out 2002 run at Studio Arena.—Donna Hoke

OPENINGS

February 6

Glorious!

In 1940s New York, the performer who everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics and was surrounded by devoted friends almost as eccentric as she was.

What I Thought I Knew

Alice, an infertile Jewish woman in her forties, discovers she is pregnant. Based upon true events and the book hailed by Oprah as “darkly hilarious…an unexpected bundle of joy,” this one-woman show is told with the intimacy of a diary and the suspense of a thriller.

February 11

Jesus Christ Superstar

The iconic musical phenomenon celebrates its fiftieth anniversary with a mesmerizing new production. Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas. The legendary score includes “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Superstar.”

Through February 16 at Shea’s.

Nunsense A-Men

It’s the original Nunsense show, only all the characters are played by men! When the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover their cook has accidentally poisoned fifty-two of the nuns, they are in dire need of funds for their burial. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show. Think Mrs. Doubtfire goes to the convent for this delightfully funny and heartfelt show.

FILM

February 20

Thursday Night Terrors

After starting season eight with a film from horror maestro John Carpenter, the hugely popular Thursday Night Terrors screening series offers a unique selection for February: Rusty Cundieff’s 1995 cult classic, Tales from the Hood. The fascinating urban-themed anthology film is the kind of underseen gem that is ideal for Terrors. As Vullo puts it, “Tales from the Hood is one of the best horror movies to come out of the nineties as well as one of the finest anthology films. Its themes still feel very much relevant today.”—Christopher Schobert
