From the Editor

Buffalo Spree is not known for its hard-hitting political coverage—though we may dip a toe into the fray now and then—but the economic crisis that has engulfed Erie County over the past few months is something that affects all of us who live in Western New York and care about its future. We know that the budget cuts are affecting many of our readers and advertisers. In fact, just before press time, it became necessary to add a sidebar to the story on horticulturalist Sally Jean Cunningham so we could inform readers that the program she manages for Erie County is probably being abolished, and that Cunningham herself has been given two weeks notice.

In spite of such discouraging events, we continue to believe in the strength of our region and its ability to revitalize itself. We will also continue to do our best to support cultural organizations and other not-for-profit agencies—who tend to suffer most in a fragile economy—by providing generous coverage of their on-going programming and special events. We encourage you to support them as well with your attendance, membership, donations, and volunteering.

By now it should be obvious that spring is on the way—and with the help of innovation, dedication, and hard work, we trust that economic stability for our region will not be far behind.
