Newell Nussbaumer has been a Buffalo booster practically since he set foot in the Queen City. As owner of an anchor Elmwood Avenue business, Thunder Bay, and member of a number of community boards as well as one of the originators of the Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts, Nussbaumer has made building up the city his vocation and avocation. “I’ve always sat on a bunch of boards, Forever Elmwood, things like that,” he says. “Whenever a new business opens on Elmwood I’m the first to run in and welcome them to the neighborhood. Instead of bashing, I just think I should do my best to promote the wonderful things about Buffalo and make the best of the city.”

Nussbaumer has done just that with the publication he started two years ago, Buffalo Rising, and now with the companion website and blog, Buffalorising.com. Nussbaumer says the blog gives him and his other contributors a chance to talk about timely events since the magazine is published quarterly. And on any given day you can read postings about his activities of the last weekend or last night (or in the case of a recent missive, posted at five a.m., of a few hours ago). “We want to focus on what’s going on right now, blow it up a little, and find out what is happening.”

Indeed. Buffalo Rising Journal is the place to go to see what’s going on. All the newest businesses, the hottest restaurants and clubs, the latest bands, the funkiest neighborhoods. If you want to be in the know for hip Buffalo, Buffalo Rising is a must read. And don’t bring any of those downer vibes, because they are upfront high on the city. “We are all about what’s great about Buffalo. There are tons of things happening right now in the city and we’re trying to let people know about them. If you just moved here, the last thing you want to hear is you made a mistake or about all the negatives. We get hits from all over the country, expatriates checking in and trying to keep track of what’s going on in the city, and thanking us for letting the world know what a great place Buffalo is.”

Though it tends to be Elmwood heavy, Nussbaumer doesn’t limit his coverage to the West Side and Elmwood area. “If it’s happening in the city, we’re on it. We have expanded our East Side coverage. We highlight East Side businesses, like GiGi’s restaurant. We cover the University District, Hertel, Downtown. We’re not location specific.”
