From the Editor Sometimes, it seems like I mention weather too often in these letters, but as an avid gardener, I tend to pay close attention to the seasons. Lately, though, our weather has provided the subject matter for conversations across Western New York and the country, as we recover from October’s premature blizzard. Although the snow didn’t last long, the devastation to our region’s green canopy is still being totaled. By most estimates, the damage is appalling: over 12,000 street trees in Buffalo will need to be replaced, while the loss to our Olmsted park system can be seen in horrific detail simply by driving down Delaware Avenue, or any other street bordering any of the parks. We can all help restore our beautiful urban forest. Here are a few options: • Donate to the Olmsted Conservancy or volunteer: www.buffaloolmstedparks.org or call 838-1249. •Donate to the Buffalo Green Fund: Reforest Buffalo, 11 Mayfair Lane, Buffalo, NY 14201. • Check with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to get information on how storm-damaged trees should be cared for: www.dec.state.ny.us. • Contact your local park and see how you can help. Parks and green spaces across Western New York, not just in the city of Buffalo, were affected by the storm, and most of us have a favorite place that needs reforesting. Thanks for tolerating this pitch on behalf of our trees, and have a great holiday!
