Dating and blogging
By Jennifer Wutz-Lopes
They’re looking, they’re flirting, they’re dating. And they’re blogging about it. While the majority of blogs out there are boring beyond beliefincluding mine sometimes, I’ll admit itsome bloggers who write about their personal lives, especially dating, can be quite compelling. Even if you’re not on the prowl for Mr. or Ms. Right, you’ll be intrigued by these writers, who talk about their search for love and companionship with refreshing, honest, and candid voices.
One anonymous Los Angeles blogger, “LB,” chronicles her Misadventures in Internet Dating at lasinglegirl.blogspot.com. A few months ago she was having a ton of fun juggling “Tattoo Guy,” “Cute Guy in a Hat,” “Cute Chinese Guy,” and “Tall Guy.” Recently she has moved on to “Mr.Irish” but constantly worries that she’s blown it with him. I’m sure she’ll find the right guy at some point. She has a good attitude and she seems to have finally gotten over the humiliation of being spotted on Match.com by a co-worker. No biggie, I say. After all, he was on there, too!
In the I Date, Therefore I Am blog (dating-is-hell.blogspot.com), the narrator writes about finding (maybe) true love with her new boyfriend, whom she met a little over a year ago after another bad breakup. As she wrote, she finally got her “head around the concept of the female expiration date and the resulting pressure to land The Man, and pronto,” she met The One. Apparently, he is pretty good in bed. And she will give you the details. A word of warning: do not read this blog at the office.
Texas Cinderella (texascinderella.blogspot.com) lives in Houston, but has recently been transferred to London by her employer. As she gets older, she is frustrated to find herself still single and surrounded by married friends, but keeps a positive outlook on her chances of finding true loveor at least having fun while searching. Many single women will identify with Cinderella, especially with this statement: “I know that things happen at different stages for people, but the thought of growing old alone in this world frightens me.” Sister, I know. I felt like that at 23. Cinderella is excited about moving to London and is eager to start her new life (and meet some hot British guys, too).
Ain’t Too Old To Date (meandwomentake2.blogspot.com) is a blog about “an average schlub’s experience when searching for a relationship after a hiatus of twenty years.” The 45-year-old is divorced from his wife after twenty years of marriage and started his blog to chronicle observations on how dating has changed since he was last on the market. Obviously, Internet dating is new to him, and he is loving it. In fact, he might be having too much fun. Six dates in seven days? I think he might need to start a spreadsheet to keep them all straight in his head.
Virginist (virginist.blogspot.com) is the blog of a 24-year-old living in New York City. Guess what? She’s never had sex. That does not worry me so much; it’s the “only been kissed once” and the “stay away vibes” that she puts out that trouble me slightly. She does not date, but she might like to in the future. Her blog is kind of a trainwreck, but I just can’t look away. I also think it’s kind of a good thing she recently purchased her first Rabbit vibrator as a birthday gift to herself.
Another blog I love, not because I have anything in common with the author, but because she makes me laugh, is Bitter With Baggage (bitterwithbaggage.typepad.com). Lola (most likely not her real name) doesn’t blog about dating, per se, but talks about getting over a past love and maybe finding someone new to love. If you visit, be sure to check out some of her best postings, including “That Bitch Stole My Husband,” and “He Loves Me But …”.
If you want to read about people who have had the worst date ever, and you maybe even want to share your own bad-date story, be sure to visit The Bad Date (thebaddate.com).You’ll laugh, you’ll cry. You’ll be glad it wasn’t you who got puked on.
After taking a look at all the people who blog about datingwhether they are successful in finding someone, or are continuously having their heart stomped onit’s good to know that love is still something to work for. And this is coming from an old married lady.
Jennifer Wutz-Lopes met her husband the old-fashioned wayin a bar. She lives in Lockport and blogs at Jen14221.com.
