In our January/February 2007 issue, we profiled almost thirty WNY singles, asking them about their careers and romantic aspirations. We invited anyone who read the profiles to e-mail us if they wanted to learn more, and we passed the e-mails along.

So now we’re catching up with some of the eligibles. Have their circumstances changed? Did Spree play a role? In a phrase, what’s up?

Here are a few responses:

Tyra Johnson (profiled by Gwen Ito) recounts: “I got a call in March from an old acquaintance and also production staff member of the Buffalo-based show Confessions of a Matchmaker. She saw the Spree article and asked if I would be interested in trying out for the show. I told her okay and went to meet a producer that day. I declined to go out with the first person they wanted to set me up with. But a few days later I got a call and was asked if I would be interested in a different date. I felt a little guilty and obligated, so I said yes. The description they gave me of my date seemed to be the exact opposite of me. He’s a rock musician; I’m an engineer. I’m tall; he’s shorter than me. I’m black; he’s not black. But I thought at very least I would get a free meal. The blind date went well and we have been dating ever since. We’ve been billed as a success story. And clips of our date were recently shown on CBS’s The Early Show and the Jamestown Evening News (that’s where Paul is from).”

According to writer Jennifer Wutz-Lopes, Maureen Littlefield is engaged to be married on May 12, 2008. She met her fiance Dean the same week the issue came out, although he did not see the article until later.

Gary Zoldos, who was profiled by Jana Eisenberg, says he’s “dating on and off, met a few interesting people, but nothing overly serious.” As Eisenberg explains, Zoldos is “spread kind of thin.” He travels almost constantly, attends rock concerts all over the U.S., and is involved with several charity projects. As Eisenberg concludes: “It’s tough to meet someone who would settle for quality versus quantity, i.e., the ideal person who is almost as busy as he is.”

And then we have several eligibles whose Spree connections go further than being mere profile subjects. Art director Chastity Taber, who was profiled by Lauren Rozanski, met fellow eligible Sean O’Shei during a photo shoot for the issue at the Albright-Knox in early November. There were definitely sparks, but the two did not start dating until a few weeks later. At the photo shoot she had encouraged him to participate in our Bachelor Auction last February—“and then I had to ‘buy’ him to make sure no one else would,” she says. They currently live together in a West Seneca home that has been in the O’Shei family for quite some time. Spree graphic artist Kristen Silvestri was not working for Spree when Lauren Rozanski wrote about her, but when a job came up, she applied and is now a Spree staffer. Silvestri received many e-mails as a result of her profile and the stunning picture that accompanies it, and one of them, from Andrew Peer, led to a meeting. Silvestri and Peer are still dating.

Eligible Paul Gevirtzman has an interesting story to tell: “What happened was not quite what I had expected. I received two bouquets of flowers—white lilies in the first and a spring mix in the second—delivered to my office. I also found three sequential notes taped to my front door—signed and including telephone numbers. I am listed in the telephone book, but going to the trouble of finding out where I worked was either charming or a bit creepy … I actually went out on three dates—definitely not made in heaven. Then unexpectedly, and at the urging of two friends who had read my profile, I posted myself on Match.com. In June I met a wonderful man. His name is Brian and on his birthday (January 21) I am planning on asking him to marry me. A June wedding. So, magic can happen when you least expect it.”

Finally, Spree writer and eligible Gwen Ito is being cagy, simply admitting that she’s “dating a younger man who makes her smile.”
