UGLY FLOOR
NO MORE:
Contest winner gets a hardwood makeover
When your dining room/kitchen features a mix of carpet, linoleum, and plywood, a contest offering an Ugly Floor makeover is a no-brainer. So it was for Boston’s Tom and Linda Flynn, who eagerly snapped shots of their hideous floor situation and sent them off to the contest sponsor, M P Caroll Hardwood, where their winning photos were chosen from among more than 150 entries.
“We’d planned on putting something down before we moved in, which is longer ago than I want to admit, but the closing got pushed back and we didn’t have the time,” explains Tom, an M&T bank vice president. The Flynns did put in the plywood as a temporary measure to correct a sunken area in front of the fireplace.
Winning the contest prompted the Flynns to rip out some kitchen units before their prize was awarded. Now, they’re redoing their kitchen. “I was so surprised when we won that I thought it was a gimmick,” Tom says. “I don’t think I realized that we’d really won and it wasn’t a sales pitch until we were in [M P Caroll Hardwood owner] Mike Caroll’s showroom looking at floors.”
The Flynns’ new floor is character red oak, which has all the natural characteristics of wood, including mineral streaks, visible knobs, and variations in grain. “Character floors are harvested from the entire tree,” Caroll explains. “They don’t pick out the real rustic-looking pieces or the real clean pieces, but mix everything together to give it a natural look. It’s perfect for the Flynns’ house, which is nestled in the [Boston] woods. The floor they picked really reflects their taste and lifestyle.”
