Since this month sees Spree saluting WNY theater, it’s fitting that we’re sponsoring another “Spree Theater Night.”
This time, the show is acclaimed fifties-set musical Forever Plaid, the theater is the Kavinoky, and the night is Thursday, September 16. Written by Stuart Ross, Plaid tells the story of four high school buddies whose dreams are seemingly cut short when they die in a car crash. The musical opens as the quartet returns from the afterlife with a second shot at superstardom. With outlandish choreography, close harmonies, and teenage squabbles, the show has all the makings of a hit.
Don’t forget to mention Spree when purchasing tickets, since the Kavinoky will give you two tickets for the price of one for the September 16 performance. The evening will also include a post-show meet-and-greet with the cast, along with light refreshments. The curtain rises at 8 p.m., and the show runs from September 10 through October 10. To purchase tickets, call the box office at 829-7668.
Also on tap this month is the annual “Gala at the Gardens” at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, this year with a Victorian ivy theme. Scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. on September 25, the Spree-sponsored event will feature special exhibits and food that honor the Gardens’ ivy collection and its Victorian architecture. It also serves as the kick-off for “Victorian Week.”
Autumn is a very busy time at the Gardens. In addition to the Gala, a Victorian tea will be held on October 3, the annual orchid show is October 16 and 17, and the popular chrysanthemum show runs from October 23 to November 14. For more info on the Gala and other events, call 827-1584 or visit www.buffalogardens.com.
If stage productions or galas aren’t your thing, check out Beyond/In WNY, a biennial contemporary art exhibition, which begins September 24 and runs for three months.
In 2007, more than 60,000 people attended the exhibition, which showcases talented regional artists from Western and Central New York, Southern Ontario, Northwest Pennsylvania, and Northeast Ohio. “I can't wait to explore the opening weekend,” says Joshua Reiman, whose work will appear at the Albright-Knox. “I am a big fan of seeing artwork throughout a city, as it acts as a way to get to know the city and region.”
Jason Bernagozzi, who recently earned his master’s degree at Alfred University, will show his work at Hallwalls. “When one is selected for a biennial for contemporary art, your work is being selected as a culturally significant statement,” he says. The piece he will showcase is an unedited HD video performance exploring the relationship between body and self, and a body and its surroundings. He adds, “Beyond/In has featured some truly great artists such as Michael Snow and Tony Conrad, so to be included as a part of that history is an honor.”
