On election eve, we present our second survey of local bloggers, pundits, and on-line activists, including John Carocci and Amy Maxwell of Revitalize Buffalo, Alan Bedenko/Bufalo Pundit, and George Johnson of Buffalo Rising Online. Meanwhile, the Guy on the 13th Floor has his usual fun with an obvious target: the September primaries.

In the biggest food section Spree has ever had, we have three major themes: First, our writers explore what’s going on in Western New York, cuisine-wise. Devon Dams-O’Connor looks at a few ethnic specialties and how they got here; Lou Petrucci takes a a drive along the Niagara Wine Trail; Brian Kantz takes a hayride on one of our most family-friendly working farms; and Joe Sweeney, Lisa Kane, and Jeannine Pitas list some multi-national options and non-meat alternatives for the adventurous diner. Secondly, we asked writers to profile some interesting Buffalo-area food people, and they gave us fascinating interviews with wine expert Paula Paradise, tea guru Trudi Stern, rock ’n’ roll chef Marty Boratin, kosher expert Rabbi Moshe Taub, and others. The third track is a look at food TV, both local and international; including a chronological exploration of how the profession of chef evolved from its private (and often lowly) beginnings to the high-profile industry it’s become today. Along the way, expect to find our usual quirky collection of sidebars and personal essays, including a compilation of Spree writers’ most memorable meals; a look at one life through cocktails; celebrations of New Orleans food; and, as always, much more. Our regular food and wine columns are also included in this section; look for mouth-watering reporting on mead, chocolate cake, bread-making, and two recent additions to the WNY restaurant scene.
