A few of the faces and places that have made headlines over the past forty years: The Church; Albright-Knox director Louis Grachos; BPO music director JoAnn Falletta; Lackawanna’s windmills; Bills quarterback-turned-politican Jack Kemp; a sign from Bethlehem Steel; The Natural’s Robert Redford; Sabre Craig Ramsay; Love Canal activist Lois Gibbs; and Buffalo Braves star Bob McAdoo. The issue’s photographs came with help from the Buffalo Historical Society and Buffalo State College’s archives. Special thanks go out to Patricia Virgil, BECHS director of library and archives, and from Buffalo State, Daniel M. DiLandro, college archivist, and Peggy Hatfield, assistant to the archives. The cover’s art direction is by Chastity Taber.

As Buffalo Spree celebrates its fortieth anniversary, we take a look back at the highs, lows, and everything in between of the last forty years in Western New York. From the riots of 1967 to the agonies and ecstasies of the Bills, Sabres, and even Braves to Love Canal, the Blizzard, Chippewa and The Church, the past four decades have been glorious, ludicrous, and never dull. Accompanying profiles of forty important events are photos from the era, the musings of an expat, tributes to Spree contributors Austin Fox and Rix Jennings, and an eye on sixties-era fashions. You’ve already tuned in. Now turn on, and drop back in time.
