FROM THE EDITOR

I imagine some of our readers must think we live on a kind of magical island, immune from headline news, political happenings, even the weather—so seldom do we refer to topical events such as presidential elections and economic booms and busts.

The truth is, most of us here at Spree follow all this just as avidly as any of you, and are equally affected by it, but for many reasons—mainly long lead times and early deadlines—we simply can’t cover the news as it happens. Since we went to press with the November issue in late September, America has a new president-elect, and serious problems in the housing and credit markets have affected the economic health of both America and the world.

You will not read very much about this in Buffalo Spree, not just because of deadlines and lead time, but also because it is not our mission to cover it. We know that you can get all you want—and more—of this news in daily newspapers, other print media, and online. For our part, we feel it is important to continue our dedication to the Western New York region—bringing interesting, useful, and entertaining features to you that will help you enjoy life here to its fullest. Because no matter what’s going on in the world, there is always something new to learn about and explore in our small part of it.

This month, we bring you an intriguing look at some headlines from Western New York’s distant and recent past, as well as our regular features and departments. Enjoy!

P.S. I almost forgot the holidays! (In the world of Spree, we are already in January.) Don’t let any economic worries impede you as you take pleasure in the company of friends and family during this season. We at Spree wish you every happiness, both for the holidays and for the year ahead.
