Baby, it’s cold outside, but there are still plenty of hot events happening in Buffalo this February. Here’s a pair of Spree-sponsored festivitiesone old, one newto raise money and awareness for some very good causes. (FYISpree is also sponsoring Martini Gras at Shea’s on February 20)
First, on Thursday, February 18, from 6 to 9 p.m., things start heating up with Polar Bites, an event that has existed since 1991 to raise money for the Buffalo Zoo, the third oldest institution of its kind in the country. This “wild-ly” popular fundraiser is sure to entertain, so shake the snow off your boots and make your way to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center to share in the fun.
Guests twenty-one and older are invited to enjoy an array of food, drinks, and specialty services from some of Buffalo’s best establishments, participate in a basket auction and silent auction, and socialize with fellow zoo supporters.
Tickets for the event can be purchased for $30 presale or $40 at the door. Those looking for VIP treatment can receive early admission and a special goodie bag for $60. Slip out of your winter hibernation today, because space is limitedso visit www.buffalozoo.org or call 995-6131 to reserve your spot.
Next, purse lovers from around the area won’t want to miss the Handbag Happy Hour taking place on Wednesday, February 24, to benefit AIDS Community Services of WNY. A brand-new event in 2010, this Happy Hour will feature both live and silent auctions of hundreds of designer, celebrity, distinctive, and “previously loved” purses.
Event coordinators have received an enthusiastic response after reaching out both locally and nationally. “We’ve received donations from our own LeeLee’s in Williamsville, Chico’s, the Carlisle Collection, Diane Von Furstenberg, and ABC Daytime,” says Kristin Scholz, development coordinator for ACS. “One of the most exciting bags we’ve received so far is from MaryKate and Ashley Olsena brand new Miu Miu (Prada) bag, valued at $1500.”
This fun and fashionable event, hosted by Sue O’Neil of Star 102.5, will take place at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens at 6 p.m. Fifty dollars covers admission, two complimentary drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to bid on hundreds of unique bags. To purchase tickets, visit www.aidscommunityservices.com or call 847-0340 (ext. 395).
The Christmas season may be over, but that’s no reason to stop giving. Take a break from snow-blowing the driveway and have some fun while showing your support for two of Buffalo’s many worthy organizations.
