It’s now an uninviting concrete rectangle that’s nearly empty ten months a year, but there are plans afoot to make the Broadway Market a welcoming destination for locals and visitors alike. A complete revamp of the East Side landmark would include adding more glass, more doors, and more vendors. Architect Bob Stark is part of the team that is undertaking this transformation; he explains, “This would create a more transparent market to invite people inside and enliven the surrounding streetscape.” Plans also include more diverse international offerings and more special events. Empire State Development is providing a few million to get the ball rolling, but much more funding will be needed to make this a reality. — Elizabeth Licata
